Celle is the leading economic center of the oil and natural gas service industry in Europe. More than 50 companies with roughly 8,500 workers cover the entire value chain in this region. Thus, Celle’s importance for the oil and natural gas industry in Europe is comparable with that of Houston in the USA.
Especially American concerns appreciate the German engineering education and have therefore established research and development departments in Celle. Most prominent is the new technology center of Baker Hughes which combines the hybrid-high-temperature-development department and all laboratories and test stations of the company. About 250 development engineers are searching for sustainable solutions in the deep drilling technology. Furthermore, Celle is planning to build the research center “Drilling Simulator”, which shall explore, model, and test highly innovative approaches for the development of the geological underground.
